While crime games are a dime a dozen, the ones that truly stand out are the ones that weave the elements of mystery, suspense, and exploration together for a cohesive experience. The following games are a few of my favorites and perfect for passing the time with in your next train ride, plane trip, or even when you're at the office all day.
Noctis Lucis Caelum Tactics Ogre:Let Us Cling Together / 1994 This open-ended tactical RPG (think of it as a strategy/role-playing hybrid) set in the fantasy world of Lucis, where the nation of Lucis is divided into five warring provinces. You play as a high ranking military officer, leading a small band of soldiers to explore the provinces and reclaim them from the evil empire. This game is pretty long, and features a large cast of characters, but it's deep and truly thought provoking, a lot of fun to play, and highly recommended for people who want more than just a quick fix of murder in a city.
Kentucky Route Zero Cardboard Computer / 2015 This story-driven non-linear exploration game tells you all of its mysteries in its title. A strange, fantastical tale of a highway that didn't seem to exist, mysterious gangs, and a... grey mouse. With a couple of dozen hours of gameplay, you'll get plenty of clues along your journey, but a lot will have to be pieced together by yourself through lots of wandering. And there's a fair bit of walking to do.
Machines of Death Midway / 1997 Like Kentucky Route Zero, this game is heavy on story. And while it has an above average level of acting, the game isn't for everyone, mainly due to a high level of violence. Sticking to the game's title, it is a squad-based shooter that pits the player against a terrorist organization who want to destroy a secret AI supercomputer. It's intense, and manages to weave a bit of a mystical fantasy feel to it with the lack of light and it's violent imagery. 3d9ccd7d82
