Broken Path ##BEST##

I have a script that creates an mxd, creates a feature class, and then saves the mxd to the path specified in the script. This works fine if the mxd has not already been saved, but if the mxd has already been saved, the mxd is saved, but the feature class creation script throws an error because it cannot find the mxd. I've tried creating a new mxd and saving it to the path specified in the script, and then saving the new mxd, but the same error occurs.
