The fictitious Last Poets speech is one of only two Howard University commencement speeches in the public domain. The other is William G. Anderson's graduation address. In the speech, Anderson calls for an educational crisis in the nation and displays anger toward inequities of wealth and opportunity in the country. (It is one of my favorites and the most obviously unoriginal speech ever given at graduation.)
I have watched this video enough times, and it never gets old. It is the best singing of this song. So live. Owen himself brings the next level and shows that he is the best MC. It must be quite an amazing experience to live in a van. If you have not seen it, you need to check out the video.
In December 1970, rapper KRS-ONE wrote "Mr. Masterson" about the group, republished it in The New York Times , and then proceeded to help establish Last Poets as some of the best-known and most influential MCs and lyricists in hip-hop. The Last Poets contributed to MCs in the early years, including KRS-ONE, Malcolm McLaren and DMC, Ice Cube, Chuck D, EPMD, N.W.A, Public Enemy and Boogie Down Productions. Their verse on the N.W.A classic "The World is Yours" is particularly memorable. They were also part of the Flying Panjabi Five, which included Juice Crew president Marley Marl, who released We're Coming Outta The Jungle in 1970. d2c66b5586
