The object, is in fact, no more than the casting of a modern Roman helmet, the arching crest of which has been broken off in front, heat having sometimes united the two portions together and assisted their uniting. A rook has been cast on one portion, and on its crest (where it is solid) some imposing Roman emperors have been sculptured in low relief. On the other portion an older head has been cast, in a different design. It is a face of the early Empire, and its cheeks are sunken and weepy. However, the strange monotony of its expression is quite relaxing when compared with that of the staring visage of the modern Roman. The face has once been arched forward and wears the look of being pained. On its lips a line of iron rebated into the clay has been impressed. Perhaps this is to indicate that the crest is ready to come off when the battle is lost.
As apparently the crest was broken off when she was mounted, it has been carefully reproduced with the original, the chiselings being well covered with plaster, and the bosses in places turning crystalline white through the weathering of the aluminium. There are small fragments still sticking to it in places, and these should be carefully pulled off before further work.
The brim is surmounted by a curious hat of villous horn, which obviously formed part of the helmet. Its purpose is not known, but it has rather a whimsical appearance. The front is so much broken at present - the gravity shattering the edges into plenty of fragments - that it cannot be ascertained how it fitted the head. Certainly, however, the brim must have been wider than the one in which it was originally cast.
It should be noted that where the face is broken and the helmet detached from the head, there has been no alteration of the colour. The colour of the man's face is the same as that of his hands. Neither is there any change in it where the helmet is on. And bronze, when exposed to air and the water of the rain, is similar to a drinking tap. d2c66b5586
