The next section, Concepts, offers a more traditional learning tool. It's broken into three sections: the Performance Toolbox, an Introduction to Modes and how they work in the context of Indian music and its scale system, and Music Theory. I found the latter two sections interesting and enjoyable but whereas Concepts provides a great deal of information and works directly with melody, modes seemed a bit abstract, but at least they have the potential to underpin many performers' understanding of the concepts. For example, modes provide a way to build scale sections and they can be combined with melody to create complex modes.
A sort of "I'm following this but I think I'm doing it slightly wrong" - kind of way. Rhythms are the basis of music and a musical string supports many different shapes while staying in tune. Swar provides two. One is complex, the other simple, both make it a lot more enjoyable and easy to study.
Swar includes a collection of world-class musicians in the instrument. This includes some Indian classical musicians including A.A. Keerthana, Venkatesh Kumar, N.S. Krishnan, Sanjeev Sen, Charulata Sen and Sachin Dev Burman. All are experts in their field and just listening to the samples makes you really appreciate what a skilled musician they are or, indeed, what skilled musicians they have produced. Obviously this is a major selling point, but it is not the only thing Swar does well. d2c66b5586
